Gavin Routt
I grew up in Coral Springs Florida in a town that was on the edge of the Everglades. When I was 19 years old I moved to North Carolina to attend college at the University of North Carolina. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Asian Studies. Through my studies at Carolina I had the opportunity to learn Japanese and even some Mandarin Chinese.
In 2000, my wife and I moved to Michigan so that I could attend Law School at Michigan State University. While in Michigan, I had the joy of welcoming into this world my two greatest treasures – my daughter and my son. While attending law school, I served as law clerk to the Honorable Richard D. Kuhn of the Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac, Michigan. Here I was able to learn the “right” way to practice law. Judge Kuhn was a straight shooter who was respected and admired by the attorneys that practiced before him. I also had the unique opportunity to research and write opinions of the Court on matters that were taken under advisement. In 2004, Judge Kuhn retired and I earned my J.D. from Michigan State University. I then served as law clerk to the Honorable Cheryl A. Matthews of the Oakland County Circuit Court–Family Law Division.
All the while I played the part of husband and father to a wonderful wife and two amazing children. My wife and I decided that North Carolina was where we wanted to raise our family.
After passing the North Carolina Bar Exam, I was eager to start the next chapter in my legal career and so I accepted a job as a criminal defense attorney in Winston-Salem.
The experience was phenomenal. My employer believed in the “Baptism by Fire” approach to training so I was able to gain a great deal of experience very quickly (I was in trial just weeks after passing the Bar exam!).
Following that, I opened a practice in Greensboro with an attorney that I met while I was practicing in Winston-Salem. We were a true general practice, so we took almost every type of case that walked in the door. We quickly developed a reputation for being a firm that wasn’t afraid to litigate cases and never backed down. I really enjoy helping people who are in need of legal representation. It’s just a great feeling and it’s why I do what I do. But at a small firm in Greensboro there were only so many people I could reach. So when the opportunity presented itself for me to join the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin I gratefully accepted the position.
Having served as a law clerk for Circuit Court Judges and also as a defense and plaintiff’s attorney before joining the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, I have the unique ability to see cases from both sides. I am an aggressive advocate for my clients, and am committed to their best interests at all times.
