J. Stewart Clontz
I grew up in North Carolina, spending my youth in the town of Statesville and out on my grandfather’s farm nearby. Later my family moved to Greensboro, where I lived until I went to college.
My great-grandfather was a well-known attorney in the Mocksville area. Early on, my mother would say, “Stewart, you could argue with a stump. You need to be a lawyer like your great grandfather.” I would read books and watch stories about lawyers helping people, protecting their rights, fighting larger concerns for the average person, and as I grew up I knew that was what I wanted to do.
I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a degree in Business Administration and developing ties to the Chapel Hill-Durham area that kept me coming back. After college, I attended the Wake Forest University School of Law, participating in mock trial and other activities. While living in Winston-Salem, I became re-acquainted with my future wife. Kathy and I had known each other as young children when we lived in Statesville.
We married and settled in the Greensboro area to raise our family and begin my legal career. I started practicing with a general practice firm, handling litigation in corporate matters and business disputes and representing people harmed by others’ negligence. Later, I moved to a firm that specialized in helping injured people and I have continued that to this day.
I feel an attorney’s highest calling is helping people protect their rights against others who have injured them through carelessness. Often the other side is a large corporation or insurance company that has little concern for the average person. Over my 19 years of practice, I have worked hard pursuing that calling in the Courts of North Carolina, from trials in the smallest magistrate’s court to appearing before the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Joining the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin has brought together two important things for me. I am back in the Chapel Hill-Durham area of which I am so fond, and more importantly, I am continuing my dedication to protecting and helping those people harmed by others’ carelessness, seeking the fair treatment and justice that they deserve.
