Rita Hanshumaker
I am originally from Long Island, New York. At a very young age, I was exposed to the Spanish language, and immediately developed a desire to speak Spanish fluently. I began my formal study of the language in elementary school, and continued my studies throughout college. I spent summers as a teenager surfing in Puerto Rico, and it was there that I developed my fluency.
During my last few years of high school, I pursued a career in the music and entertainment industry. I recorded a rap record entitled “The Party’s Live” in 1986, and performed the single on the television show “Showtime at the Apollo.” I acted in feature films including “Crocodile Dundee II,” and appeared in the television production of “Dream Street” in New York City.
After high school, I attended and graduated with honors from The State University of New York at Stony Brook. While at Stony Brook, I happened to take a business law class. It was then that I discovered my passion for the law. I took any law classes the University offered, and served as a teaching assistant to several professors who taught law classes there. While in college, I also volunteered to teach English as a second language I found great satisfaction in helping Latinos overcome the language barrier. I wondered if there might be a career where I could use the law to help the Latino community in other ways.
After college, I decided to attend law school. I graduated from UNC School of Law-Chapel Hill in 1997. I then worked as a litigation attorney for an insurance defense firm in Raleigh for the next four years. I very much enjoyed trying cases in front of a jury, and arguing motions in front of a judge. I was disappointed, however, that I could not use my Spanish often.
In 2001, I had my first daughter, and decided to put my legal career on hold to become a full time at home mother. I stayed home with my two daughters until 2007, when I joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin as one of the attorneys that makes first contact with Latino clients regarding their personal injuries. I am thrilled to be able to use my Spanish, knowledge of the law, and experience in dealing with insurance companies to help those who are injured obtain the compensation they deserve.
