A major United States financial center, Charlotte is North Carolina’s largest city with a population of 687,000. Its prime location along the eastern seaboard is largely responsible for the large number of Fortune 500 companies that are headquartered in Charlotte. Asheville, North Carolina – As the North Carolina doorway to the Smoky Mountains, this city of about 78,300 residents offers a mix of eclectic urban charm and outdoor recreational adventure. Its downtown alone supports more than 30 art galleries, and the nearby mountains offer everything from fly fishing and mountain biking to zipline canopy tours and whitewater rafting. Those who prefer tamer fare can enjoy the Western North Carolina (WNC) Nature Center, which houses 40 acres of animals in their native habitats, or take a leisurely drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville is located in Buncombe County about 115 miles from the City of Charlotte.

Boone, North Carolina – In 2005, this town of about 15,000 residents in the North Carolina highlands was named one of the nation’s four best multi-sport recreational areas by Adventure Sports Magazine. The publication lauded the town for its many outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, biking and kayaking. It was particularly impressed with the 200 miles of mountain biking trails available in the nearby Pisgah National Forest. Other nearby attractions include Linville Caverns, Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain. In addition to outdoor recreation, Boone is the home to Appalachian State University, a public university that has placed among the nation’s top 15 southern universities in the annual US News and World Report Best College Guide since the rankings began in 1986. Boone is located in Watauga County about 100 miles from the City of Charlotte.

Concord, North Carolina – The capital of Cabarrus County, this city of about 79,000 is racing towards the future on the heels of the motorsports industry. Home to Lowe’s Motor Speedway, more than 90 percent of all NASCAR teams are located within 50 miles of the city, and more than 200 ancillary businesses in Cabarrus County support the motorsports industry. The nearly 180,000 people who attend the annual Coca Cola 600 make Concord the state’s fourth-largest city each Memorial Day weekend. Cabarrus County also ranks third in state tourism expenditures. A major draw, besides Lowes Motor Speedway, is Concord Mills, a “shopper-tainment” facility that receives 17 million visitors a year. Concord is located in Cabarrus County only 20 miles from the City of Charlotte.

Gastonia, North Carolina – While often overshadowed by the City of Charlotte, Gastonia offers proximity to a major metropolitan area with a much lower cost of living. The annual Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) Cost-of-Living Surveys consistently rank Gastonia/Gaston County as one of the communities with the lowest cost-of-living in the Southeast.* The nearby Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens includes nearly 400 acres of rolling meadows, woodland and lakefront property. The Garden’s Orchid Conservatory is the Charlotte metropolitan region’s only public conservatory devoted to the display of tropical plants. In addition to the botanical gardens, residents can enjoy The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC), the world’s largest manmade whitewater facility and outdoor center, located just across the Catawba River. Gastonia is located in Gaston County only 20 miles from the City of Charlotte.

Hickory, North Carolina – Furniture is what Hickory is all about. This city of about 41,000 is the home of the Hickory Furniture Mart – the largest of its kind in the nation – and the portion of US 321 between Hickory and Blowing Rock is known locally as the “20 miles of furniture.” But the city also contains a planetarium, aquarium, children’s science museum and the first collection of American Art to be assembled outside of New York City. But perhaps its biggest draw is its geographic location, about an hour from Lake James (where “Hunt for Red October” and “The Last of the Mohicans” were filmed), the Blue Ridge Parkway, the City of Charlotte and the Piedmont Triad. It is also the home of Lenoir-Rhyne University. No wonder Hickory is a three-time winner of the All-American City Award (1967, 1987 and 2007), given annually by the National Civic League to only 10 cities nationwide. Hickory is located in Catawba County about 51 miles from the City of Charlotte and 70 miles from the City of Winston-Salem.

Kannapolis, North Carolina – This city of about 44,000 residents is home to the North Carolina Research Center (NCRC), designed to foster research and collaboration among the best minds in biotechnology, nutrition and health. When completed, this campus will include a 311,000-square-foot core research laboratory, plus research facilities for eight local universities and the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. The on-site David H. Murdock Research Institute, a $150 million foundation, will house the world’s most advanced scientific equipment, available for use by everyone who leases space on the campus. Designed to be a “science city,” when completed the campus will also include stores, restaurants, residences, schools, walking paths, bike trails and open space. Kannapolis is located in Cabarrus County about 26 miles from the City of Charlotte and six miles from the City of Concord.

Mooresville, North Carolina – This town of about 30,000 is home to the NASCAR Technical Institute, the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame and more than 60 NASCAR teams and racing-related businesses. No wonder the town is nicknamed “Race City USA.” Those who enjoy more passive fare can enjoy nearby Lake Norman, the state’s largest man-made lake by surface area with 520 miles of shoreline. Those seeking more exotic fare can visit the Lazy 5 Ranch, a safari park featuring more than 750 animal species. Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse is also headquartered in the town. Mooresville is located in Iredell County, about 30 miles from the City of Charlotte.

Salisbury, North Carolina – This city of about 26,500 residents is the county seat of Rowan County. City residents are proud of its many historic renovations, which include the Salisbury Confederate Prison and National Cemetery, as well as a large historic residential district that has many homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The local Amtrak station is housed in a historically- renovated depot. Salisbury is also the birthplace of many notable North Carolinians including U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, financier and philanthropist Julian H. Robertson and retired NBA player Bobby Jackson. Its largest employer is Food Lion, a regional supermarket chain headquartered in the city. Salisbury is located in Rowan County about 42 miles from the City of Charlotte and about five miles from the City of Spencer.

Shelby, North Carolina – This small city of about 21,000 residents is located between Charlotte and Asheville along the North Carolina/South Carolina border. According to the city’s official Web site, Shelby prides itself on maintaining a genuine small-town character and quality of life in contrast to the nearby “heavily congested” metropolitan areas. The city was designated an “All-American City” by the National Civic League in 1970, and was named one of the first national and state “Main Street” communities in 1980. Its City Park complex includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a functioning 1919 Herschell-Spillman Carousel, a miniature train, and a nine-hole golf course. Shelby also prides itself on its large number of historically-renovated buildings. Shelby is located in Cleveland County about 45 miles from the City of Charlotte and about 80 miles from the City of Asheville.

Spencer, North Carolina – This town of about 3,450 residents is home to the North Carolina Transportation Museum, located on the former site of the Southern Railway Co.’s largest steam locomotive servicing facility. During its peak, the Spencer railroad facility employed nearly 3,000 people, which directly or indirectly employed most of the residents of Spencer, East Spencer and surrounding communities. The museum, which opened in 1983, houses 15 exhibit areas, including a 37-bay roundhouse. It is currently raising funds for its largest restoration project to date – the original back shop. Spencer is located in Rowan County about halfway between the City of Charlotte (47 miles) and The City of Greensboro (48 miles) and five miles from The City of Salisbury.

Statesville, North Carolina – This city of about 27,000 is located about midway (43 miles) from the Triad and Charlotte, and is only an hour’s drive from the North Carolina mountains. Though it is sandwiched between two major metropolitan areas, the city has preserved more than 175 acres of park land.  Water fun is plentiful along nearby Lake Norman, the state’s largest man-made lake by surface area. History buffs can enjoy the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site, which provides a window into the French and Indian War, as well as downtown Statesville, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For many, the best time to visit Statesville is in October during the annual Carolina BalloonFest, featuring a mass ascension of 50 hot air balloons. Statesville is located in Iredell County about 43 miles from both the City of Charlotte and City of Winston-Salem.
