Battle Park – the city’s largest park – offers scenic drives and overlooks, walks along the Tar River and a view of the site of the original village of Rocky Mount. Princeville, North Carolina – Princeville was almost wiped out in 1999’s Hurricane Floyd, which displaced many of the town’s residents. A 2004 special census estimated the town’s population at 2,028. Though the town is small, it holds a special place in United States’ history as the oldest town incorporated by African-Americans in the United States. Settled by freed slaves as “Freedom Hill” in 1865, it was officially incorporated under the name Princeville 20 years later. Princeville is located Edgecombe County about 15 miles from Rocky Mount.

Tarboro, North Carolina – This town of about 10,400 residents has one of the largest historic districts in the state with 45 blocks of old homes, parks and one of the two original town commons left in the United States. Historic properties include the 1808 Blount-Bridgers House and the Civil War-era Calvary Church and Churchyard. Open space is also plentiful in this historic town. Riverfront Park provides 25 acres of cypress lowlands, landscaped gardens, trails and a boat ramp. The 52-acre Indian Lake Park features a 6.5 acre lake, outdoor stage, pavilion, nature trail, museum, campgrounds and a variety of recreational activities. A bike trail provides easy access through the town. Higher education and cultural activities are available through the Edgecombe Community College and North Carolina Wesleyan College. Tarboro is located in Edgecombe County about 17 miles from Rocky Mount.
