A 49 year old bicyclist was injured after being struck by a pickup truck in Bertie County, North Carolina on March 24 at 8:04 p.m. The accident occurred near Windsor when a 1995 Dodge pickup truck and a Schwinn bicycle were both traveling north on NC 45 from Old Merry Hill Road. The pickup truck struck the bicycle, which ran off the road to the right and overturned, ejecting the bicyclist in the process. The police report noted that the bicycle rider was wearing flashing red lights in both the front and rear of his clothing. The bicyclist was clearly injured. He was transported by Bertie County EMS to Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor. The Dodge driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The U.S. Congress is taking the Social Security backlog seriously. On April 27, it held a joint hearing between the (U.S. Congress) House Social Security Subcommittee and the (U.S. Congress) House Ways and Means Committee on Income Security and Family Support. The hearing was set only a week after the House Social Security Subcommittee elected its new chairman, Early Pomeroy.

The hearing will address the backlog in pending applications for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The Congressional hearing will discuss a newly emerging backlog in initial disability applications. The Social Security Administration projects that disability claims will increase by nearly 29 percent from FY 2008 to 2010, and are not expected to drop significantly until after 2012. It further estimates that by the end of fiscal year 2010, more than 1 million people in the U.S. will be awaiting a decision on their initial disability applications.

A 28 year old man from Greensboro was injured in a collision between a car and a tractor trailer in Guilford County, North Carolina on April 22 at 6:55 a.m. The car, truck accident occurred near Whitsett when a 2007 Petersbilt tractor trailer was parked on the shoulder off the NC 61 off ramp from Interstate 40 (I-40), and a 1995 Dodge was traveling east on the I-40 off-ramp.
