A 19-year-old man claimed he hit a pedestrian in Concord on Sept. 16 while distracted by a spider in his car, but police believe drugs may have been involved.
The accident occurred just before 7 a.m., when a 58-year-old woman was walking along the curb of Clarke Creek Parkway and was struck from behind by a car, breaking its windshield glass. Police say the woman was walking next to the curb and not on the sidewalk.
The driver claimed he was distracted after swatting at a spider which fell into his lap. He claimed he stopped to help the woman. However, several witnesses told police that when the driver hears sirens he ran back to the car and threw drug paraphernalia into nearby shrubs.
A Concord K-9 unit found the items tossed in the bushes – which included a marijuana grinder and digital scales.
The victim, who suffered serious head and spinal injuries, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast.
Police took a blood sample from the driver, who admitted to smoking a marijuana blunt seven hours before the crash. He was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges are pending.
