Truck Overturns in Jones County, NC

A tractor-trailer overturned in the Town of Dover, NC when its 27-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel.

The accident occurred on Sept. 28 in the Jones County section of U.S. 70 just before the speed limit becomes 70 mph. The truck hit the right shoulder of the roadway and the driver overcorrected, forcing the truck to overturn. As a result, traffic was tied up for about 10 hours.

Smithfield Section of I-95 Closed After Wreck

The state Department of Transportation says all four northbound lanes of I-95 were closed at mile marker 83 near Smithfield on Sept. 26 after an automobile accident at around 11:30 a.m. Several people were injured and taken to a hospital in Raleigh.

Four Injured in SUV Accident in Charlotte

Four people were injured when an SUV crashed into a guardrail on the inner loop of I-485 between South Tryon Street and Arrowood Road in Charlotte on Sept. 25 at 7 a.m. After striking the guardrail, the vehicle overturned several times. Alleged Drunken Driver Transporting Toddler Hits Pole

A suspected drunk driving with a toddler in her car crashed into a pole near Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte on Sept. 23.

Woman Crashes Car into Apartment Building

A woman crashed her SUV into a three-story apartment building on Park Road in South Charlotte

on Sept. 24. She claimed to have swerved to avoid an animal in the road.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police have not disclosed if charges will be filed.

Street Racing Suspect Gets Bond Revision

A Mecklenburg County, NC woman under house arrest while awaiting trial in a street racing case recently has been given permission to leave her home to attend church and doctors’ appointments.

The woman has been charged with three counts of murder following an incident where she allegedly was racing another North Carolina resident on N.C. 49. Both drivers had topped speeds of 100 mph. Fatal Collision Caused by Wrong Way Driver

A 30-year-old Charlotte woman who was driving the wrong way on East W.T. Harris Boulevard in Charlotte caused a fatal head-on accident on Sept. 23 just after 5 a.m.
The woman was driving her Toyota Corolla 4S in the wrong direction when she struck a car driven by 42-year-old Charlotte man.

The man died at the scene. The woman was transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

Truck Accident Causes 6,000 Gallon Fuel Spill

A tractor trailer accident on U.S. 40 in Colorado spilled 6,000 gallons of fuel onto the roadway.

The accident occurred just west of the Henderson Mike turn-off, about eight miles west of the Town of Empire on Sept. 21 around 12:30 p.m. Colorado state police say the truck’s driver was traveling too fast through a series of switchbacks, which caused him to lose control and forced the tanker to roll on its passenger side.

A prison guard and three inmates from the Caswell Correctional Center in Yanceyville were injured while on clean up duty in Person County.

The crew was struck by a 2009 Dodge van while picking up trash along U.S. 501 South, 2.7 miles south of Roxboro. On Sept. 22 at 9:40 a.m.

Man Dies in Outer Banks’ Rip Current

A 50-year-old San Francisco resident drowned on Sept. 18 after being caught in a rip current off Mirlo Beach in Rodanthe, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He was pulled from the water, but died at Outer Banks Hospital.

The man was swimming with two other people, who were rescued by a family member.

Hearing Set for Fatal Parasailing Accident

The Coast Guard will conduct three days of hearings this week about a deadly parasailing accident that claimed the lives of two women at Ocean Isle Beach on Aug. 28. at a North Carolina beach last month.

The crew of the parasailing vessel Tied High and several of its passengers have been called to give statements, among others.

The two women died of blunt force trauma when a rope connecting the parasail to the boat disconnected.

Elderly Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit By Car

A 73-year-old Winston Salem pedestrian died two days after being hit by a car on Sept. 21 at 7:35 p.m. on Crafton Street in Winston-Salem.

The victim was rushed to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:24 a.m. The police's traffic-enforcement unit is investigating.

NC Traffic Court Created for Death and Serious Injury Cases

A new traffic court was created in the 13th Judicial District of North Carolina – covering Brunswick, Bladen and Columbus Counties – specifically to deal with traffic violations that could result in death or serious injury.

It is expected to hear mostly DWI and speeding cases.

NC Receives $9 million in Highway Safety Funds

The N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) has received more than $9 million in highway safety grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the 2010 grant year. These funds will translate into 139 grants for police departments, sheriff’s offices and other state and local agencies across North Carolina.

Agencies apply for the grants annually and are chosen based on need, commitment to highway safety, traffic crash and fatality data.
