A single-car accident at the Durham city-county line killed two people and left one in critical condition.

The accident took place shortly after 3 p.m. on Aug. 24 when a 2004 Nissan Maxima driven by a 19-year-old Durham resident ran off the right side of the road while traveling east on Old Oxford Road near Craven Street. All three of the car’s occupants were thrown from the car which struck a ditch, flipped into the woods, and came to rest upside down and leaning against a tree.

The two passengers – a Hillside High School freshman and a 22-year-old Durham resident – were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to Duke University Hospital in critical condition.

A child’s car seat was also ejected from the vehicle, which led police, firefighters and sheriff’s deputies to search the area along with two dogs for any infant that might have been traveling with the group. None was found.

The wreck occurred after the first day of classes for the 2009-2010 school year at Hillside High School. Grief counseling was to take place at the Hillside Theater throughout the next day. Social workers and counselors have been called in from other facilities in the district to aid in the effort.
