A 73-year-old Winston Salem pedestrian died two days after being hit by a car on Sept. 21 at 7:35 p.m. on Crafton Street in Winston-Salem.

The victim was rushed to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:24 a.m. The police's traffic-enforcement unit is investigating.

A new traffic court was created in the 13th Judicial District of North Carolina – covering Brunswick, Bladen and Columbus Counties – specifically to deal with traffic violations that could result in death or serious injury.

It is expected to hear mostly DWI and speeding cases.

The N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) has received more than $9 million in highway safety grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the 2010 grant year. These funds will translate into 139 grants for police departments, sheriff’s offices and other state and local agencies across North Carolina.

Agencies apply for the grants annually and are chosen based on need, commitment to highway safety, traffic crash and fatality data.
