Study Finds Alcohol Tests for Truck, Bus Drivers Improves Safety

Posted by: Attorney Michael Jordan

A recent study from Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health and Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health found that mandatory alcohol testing among bus and truck drivers has reduced danger by more than 20 percent.
The study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991, which mandated alcohol testing for transit employees involved in safety functions.

The study sampled 70,000 motor carrier trucks and 83,000 non-motor carrier cars. The motor carrier portion showed a 23 percent reduced risk of alcohol-related fatalities. Each year, 4,000 crashes occur between a heavy vehicle, such as a truck or bus, and passenger cars. Surprisingly, while 27 percent of the car drivers are under the influence of alcohol in these accidents, the same is true of only 3 percent of the truck or bus drivers.
