A tractor trailer accident on U.S. 40 in Colorado spilled 6,000 gallons of fuel onto the roadway.
The accident occurred just west of the Henderson Mike turn-off, about eight miles west of the Town of Empire on Sept. 21 around 12:30 p.m. Colorado state police say the truck’s driver was traveling too fast through a series of switchbacks, which caused him to lose control and forced the tanker to roll on its passenger side.
The accident caused a closure of Berthoud Pass that remained in effect until about 9:30 p.m. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. A hazmat team was dispatched to the scene. Motorists were directed to use Highway 9 as an alternative route.
