A tractor-trailer overturned in the Town of Dover, NC when its 27-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The accident occurred on Sept. 28 in the Jones County section of U.S. 70 just before the speed limit becomes 70 mph. The truck hit the right shoulder of the roadway and the driver overcorrected, forcing the truck to overturn. As a result, traffic was tied up for about 10 hours.
The truck’s content – fruit and produce – remained inside the trailer, which weighted too much to be turned upright without removing the goods. The produce containers also had to be unloaded before the wrecked truck could be removed and the roadway reopened.
The company sent another truck to carry off the goods.
The driver was charged with careless and reckless driving.
