Mr. Talton joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 2006 and is currently a Litigation Attorney in the Personal Injury Department. He obtained his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law, graduating as a Marshall-Brennan Fellow. He received his B.S. in History from North Carolina State University.

Mr. Talton served in the Miami Public Defender's Office before joining the firm.

"As an attorney, I am always surprised by how many jury members don't realize that it is the defendant's insurance company — not the defendant himself — that generally pays the jury award," Mr. Talton said. "That is one reason why the state requires insurance coverage for motor vehicle operators, and why insurance premiums vary based on a person's driving record.

"However, the Rules of Evidence prohibit mention of liability insurance to the jury except under special circumstances. This leads jurors to think, incorrectly, that the award comes out of the defendant's pocket. It is a tremendous challenge to tell a complete story if a jury doesn't have all this information."

In addition to practicing with the firm, Mr. Talton is active in activities related to the Hispanic community, including serving as chair of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) Hispanic/Latino Affairs Division.
