James S. Farrin sees himself as a blend of his two parents.

His mother is a profoundly spiritual woman who became an ordained Presbyterian minister at the age of 70.

“The importance of serving other people, doing the right thing, living morally and ethically is ingrained in me,” Jim said.

His father is a successful international sales and marketing professional whose career required that his family live abroad. By the time he was 16, Jim had lived in nine foreign countries throughout North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

“I’m a balance between my mother and father,” Jim said. “I want to help people in a business setting.”

Jim was able to realize this desire through the creation of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin.

“In our practice areas, we help people,” he said. “It is a privilege being their safe harbor, friend, counselor and guardian – to take people from a difficult point in their lives and hopefully improve their situation with tangible results.”

Jim studied philosophy in college, a subject he gravitated to because of its analytical nature and – like religion – how it dealt with fundamentally serious issues.

When it came time to select a career, it was not “legal theory” that attracted Jim, rather it was the ability to use law as a tool to help others.

“The law itself can at times seem dry, arcane and boring,” he said. “But when you use the law to help people, then it has a lot of meaning for me.”

Jim’s professional goals have changed somewhat since he founded the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 1997. At that time, his focus was on how much good he could accomplish as a lawyer. Now it’s what 100+ people can do together to improve the lives of others.

That goal involves making sure that each person within the firm never forgets his or her place in the bigger picture.

“People are surprised by my interest in creating a sense of community in the workplace,” Jim said, “but working together on a cause can be life’s greatest reward.”

Jim lives in Durham with his wife, Robin, two daughters and two dogs (a Boston terrier and a golden retriever). He also has two adult step-children, one of whom lives in Washington, DC and the other in New York City.

Despite a wayfaring childhood, he loves being rooted in North Carolina. Outside of work, Jim enjoys spending time with his family (especially at the beach), staying fit, playing golf, watching competitive sports and recreational travel.
