Lee A. Caplan - A Personal Perspective
Ask Lee A. Caplan about his passion and the conversation quickly turns to pro bono work.

We (lawyers) have the keys to the courthouse. It is locked to so many and we have the keys,” he said. “Resolutions to issues the court can bring to those who otherwise have no access can really change their lives. I enjoy using the skills I have as gifts to those who need them.”

One of his greatest sources of pride is helping to create Allegany Law in 1998, a pro bono legal services program for low-income residents of Cumberland, Maryland that is still active today. Lee was also a member and former president of the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland. He currently serves as an American Bar Association Peer Consultant to donated legal services programs across the United States.

Lee began his career practicing general law at the firm of Sullivan & Sullivan, P.A. before opening his own personal injury practice in the picturesque Appalachian mountains of Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia.

He has more than 20 years of legal experience, the vast majority of them in the personal injury arena.

“Every time we resolve a personal injury claim we are changing someone’s life,” Lee said. “When clients follow our advice and obtain a result, it’s very satisfying.”

In his free time, Lee enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, and going for long drives in his antique car. He refers to his family as Terp-Heels – crosses between Marylanders and North Carolinians.

“We love living here,” he said. “We enjoy the four-season climate, but especially the Carolina ‘weather dividend’ of longer summers and shorter winters compared to what we experienced in the central Appalachians.”
