Matt Harbin - A Personal Perspective
By entering the legal profession, Matthew Harbin is following a long family tradition of helping others.

“My family has a strong tradition of serving the community,” Matthew said. “My father taught for more than 30 years in the public school system (in Delaware). My mother runs a food bank and serves as an assistant director of a senior center. I entered the legal profession because it would be an opportunity to serve my community in a similar manner.”

Matthew began serving others while still at the University of North Carolina School of Law by participating in several pro-bono projects. He was hired out of law school with a small Raleigh, North Carolina firm representing injured workers in their workers’ compensation claims and workers with unpaid wages claims.

He was then hired as a Special Deputy Commissioner for the North Carolina Industrial Commission (NCIC), which rules on and administers the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act. In that position, he was responsible for deciding whether injured workers should continue to receive benefits, reviewing whether settlement agreements were appropriate and deciding on disputes regarding necessary medical treatments.

This broad background gave Matthew tremendous insight into the North Carolina Industrial Commission’s (NCIC’s) decision-making process, as well as an acute understanding of how devastating a sudden on-the-job injury can be.

“My job at  the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin allows me to practice substantive law while helping many people obtain proper medical care and needed disability benefits.”

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and is an active member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Raleigh.
