On May 2, 2008, a 24-year-old man was driving north on Interstate 85 near Gastonia, North Carolina when he ran off the road and into a wooded area. The car flipped several times in the car accident, ejecting both the driver and a passenger.

The passenger was transported to Gaston Memorial Hospital where he later died. The driver was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with injuries from the car accident.
