On March 29, 2008, a 2000 Dodge pickup was traveling along N.C. Highway 87, about two miles south of Sanford, North Carolina at about 8 p.m. The Dodge crossed the center line, getting into a car accident with a 2000 Isuzu and killing a 38-year-old passenger.

The driver of the Isuzu received minor injuries. The driver of the Dodge pickup was airlifted to UNC Hospitals, where he was listed in fair condition two days later the fatal car accident.

The driver of the pickup was charged with driving while impaired (DWI), driving with a revoked license and second-degree murder.

On April 22, 2008, a 52-year-old Greyhound bus driver fell asleep at the wheel while driving south on U.S. 1 in Vance County, North Carolina. The bus then got into a bus accident, running off the road and hitting a ditch before rolling over on its side.

The bus accident, which occurred at about 5:45 a.m., sent 12 of the 29 passengers to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The bus slid about 100 feet before stopping at a tree line on the right shoulder. The passengers got out of the bus through escape hatches on the bus’ roof.

While not all of the passengers in the bus accident were injured, all were taken to the hospital.

The bus involved in the accident was traveling from Richmond, Virginia to Fayetteville, North Carolina.

On April 16, 2008, the driver of a tractor-trailer was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 5 years probation for causing a fatal auto accident in Columbia County, Wisconsin.

The tractor trailer was backing down Highway 51 onto Maas Road, which created the illusion that he was traveling in the correct direction. An 82-year-old man and his 22-year-old grandson were returning from a Wisconsin Badgers basketball game when their car collided with the tractor-trailer and slid underneath it. The 82-year-old grandfather was killed instantly. His grandson survived with only minor injuries.

The 49-year-old tractor-trailer driver changed his story several times and initially resisted police officers. His sentence comes as part of a plea bargain in which he agreed to plead guilty to homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The truck driver will also be required to donate $250 per year to a fund commemorating the man he killed.

On March 25, 2008, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, 2 bicyclists were injured in separate accidents.

The first accident occurred on Raeford Road when a 47-year-old man tried to cross the street on his bicycle and was hit by a Kia SUV traveling with inbound traffic. The bicyclist hit the windshield and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with injuries.

On Cliffdale Road, another bicyclist was hit by a car, but police have not released information regarding the accident.

In April 2007, a 34-year-old woman was driving north on North Carolina 903 when she ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic, causing a car accident. Her car hit a Toyota heading south, carrying a 53-year-old and a 22-year-old.

The woman was driving her 8-year-old daughter, who was properly restrained in a booster seat. The daughter died in the car accident, though authorities are not sure what type of injuries caused her death.

Everyone involved in the car accident was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The driver and passenger of the Toyota were listed in good condition. The mother of the young girl was not listed as a patient.

Authorities suspect heavy rainfall may have played a role in the fatal car accident. Charges may be pending.

On April 6, 2008, a 48-year-old man died in a fatal car accident on Red Hill Road, near Eureka, North Carolina. Authorities said he crossed the center line, hit a bridge railing and overturned before ending up in a ditch.

No one reported the car accident until about 10 hours after it occurred. The man was not wearing his seatbelt.

On April 4, 2008, State Highway Patrol found two men and one woman dead in a flipped car outside of Cherryville, North Carolina after a fatal car accident. The wreckage from the car accident wasn’t discovered for more than 12 hours after the car accident happened.

A relative of one of the victims found them when he realized they never reached their destination. Authorities suspect speed was a factor in the car accident, and have said the car was traveling northwest on Bud Black Road when it ran off the road and hit an embankment. Troopers also suspect alcohol was involved in the car accident.

On April 3, 2008, two children were hit in a pedestrian-car accident on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh, North Carolina. A woman and her three children were attempting to cross the road against the light at about 4:45 p.m., when two of the children separated from the mother and ran ahead.

A 1992 Toyota 4 Runner driven by a 57-year-old woman then hit the two children, a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old. They were listed in critical condition after the pedestrian-car accident, but both died shortly after.

Raleigh police are not planning to file charges against the driver of the vehicle.

On March 30, 2008, a University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) student was killed in a car accident. At about 2 a.m., a car lost control on North College Road, crossed the median and hit the car carrying the student.

The 22-year-old student died on the way to the hospital. The driver of the car carrying the student, as well as another passenger, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries.

The driver of the car that crossed the median was also taken to the hospital after the fatal car accident.

On March 26, 2008, a jury found a woman driver involved in a fatal car accident in July 2007 guilty with four counts of death by motor vehicle. In January 2008, a jury found her guilty, but she appealed the verdict.

In July 2007, five people were loading a disabled vehicle onto a trailer in Elon, North Carolina. The woman charged was driving a minivan when it ran off the road and hit the trailer, killing four of the five people.

The initial trial found her guilty but the judge did not sentence her to any jail time because she had no previous criminal record. She instead received a suspended sentence, including restitution, supervised probation and a one-year suspended driver’s license for the car accident. She faces her second sentencing in early April 2008.

One woman is dead after a fatal one-car accident that happened on March 27, 2008 in Raleigh, North Carolina near the Western Boulevard-Hillsborough Street split.

The 46-year-old driver of a 2002 Chevrolet crashed her vehicle after swerving into the far right lane, running her car off the road. The car flew down an embankment and flipped over, coming to rest upside-down on Western Boulevard. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the fatal accident.

Speed, drugs, and alcohol were not a factor in the accident, police said.

On March 26, 2008, a bus accident occurred in Wilmington, North Carolina that left four people injured.

New Hanover County School Bus 253 was transporting students to three schools when it collided with a vehicle on the corner of 8th Street and Wooster Street.

Three adults and one student were taken to the hospital with injuries. The school bus driver was suspended from driving and received a “safe movement” violation ticket.

A woman died in a car accident on March 22, 2008 in the town of Hickory, North Carolina. The woman was a passenger in the car driven by her husband.

The couple was traveling home in the westbound side of Route 108 when the fatal car accident occurred. According to police reports, the couple was turning into Gaslight Mobile Home Park and pulled in front of a car traveling in the eastbound lane. The 69-year-old woman was ejected from the car and suffered blunt force trauma to the head, neck, and chest. The coroner’s report also revealed the woman had several internal injuries as well as broken bones in the face, ribs, and spine. Her body was found 25 to 30 feet away from the car accident.

The woman’s husband was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, North Carolina with several internal injuries of his own.

The other driver, a 25-year-old, was found to have a blood alcohol content of .227, almost three times the legal limit. According to police, charges for driving while impaired (DWI) are pending. He suffered only minor injuries in the car accident.

A 19-year-old teenager faces driving while impaired (DWI) charges after crashing into a utility pole on Six Forks Road. The accident knocked out power in the area for six hours, and part of Six Forks had to be closed for hours.

The driver, who lives on Sandy Forks Road, ran from the scene of the accident, but was found and arrested in a nearby parking lot. He will also be charged with a hit and run and underage consumption of alcohol.

A 75-year-old High Point woman was killed on March 20, 2008 when she tried to cross the street. She was struck by a pickup truck.

The fatal accident occurred at the on Hartley Drive around 1:30 p.m. in High Point, North Carolina. The driver of a 1989 Ford pickup who hit the woman was not injured. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said that they are still investigating into the fatal accident, but that charges may not be filed against the driver because the 75-year-old woman was not crossing the street at a crosswalk.

On March 18, 2008, two Statesville, North Carolina people were injured in a three-car accident on Sullivan Road. One of those injured included a six-year-old boy. Two injured people were taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital.

A 40-year-old Statesville woman drove her 1982 Mercury over the center line of Sullivan Road, hitting the side of a 1990 Honda, whose 17-year-old driver then hit a guardrail.

The Mercury driver then collided with a 1997 Jeep, where the six-year-old boy was a passenger. The six-year-old boy and the Mercury driver were both taken to the hospital with injuries.

The 31-year-old driver of the Jeep was charged with failure to have a child restraint system and the injured Mercury driver was charged with driving left of center, police said.

On March 20, 2008 an intoxicated woman slammed her car into another woman and her two young sons in Raleigh, North Carolina on Creedmoor Road near Cressage Court. The 61-old-woman crossed the center line and caused the car accident. She was suspected of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and blew a 0.14 on the Breathalyzer test.

The driver of the other car suffered a broken leg among other injuries and was being treated at WakeMed Hospital-Raleigh Campus on Thursday night. She had two sons who also suffered injuries from the car accident. The younger of the two sons was being kept for overnight observation. In addition, one of the family dogs in the car needed to be euthanized due to injuries received in the crash. Another dog is receiving treatment.

On March 17, 2008, a driver on Interstate 95 lost control of his car, hitting a guard rail and a tour bus. The car accident caused the driver of the bus to be ejected. The bus driver, who was killed in the fatal car accident, was not wearing his seatbelt.

The driver of the car was taken to Southeast Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the bus accident.

On March 14, 2008, a Shelby mother was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) after a car accident that injured her 8-year-old son. The woman crossed the center line and hit another car. She was charged with DWI at the time of the car accident.

Now the Shelby newspaper reported Xanax pills were found in the car. The woman does not have a prescription.

On March 18, 2008, an out-of-state driver was traveling on Interstate 85 north when she lost control of her SUV and got in a one-car accident, hitting the guard rail to the right. The SUV moved across the highway and into the medial wall.

The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fatal car accident.

On March 17, 2008 a fatal car accident occurred on U.S. 13 in Pitt County, North Carolina that left one man dead and another in critical condition.

A 17-year-old from Farmville, North Carolina drove straight into a Winterville man’s SUV on U.S. 13 in the fatal car accident. The 17-year-old died when his pickup truck caught on fire and burned.

The 49-year-old Winterville man was pulled from his vehicle by several bystanders who pulled over behind the accident. An unidentified woman passenger with the Winterville man got out of the SUV and cried for help as the other vehicle shot up in flames. A nurse and two men ran to the SUV and pulled the man out of the vehicle.

Paramedics who arrived on the scene were able to stabilize the Winterville man and take him to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

One man died on March 18, 2008 after a motorcycle accident in Apex, North Carolina. Police stated that speed was a factor in the fatal accident.

The 34-year-old Fuquay-Varina man died after he lost control of his motorcycle on Bell’s Lake Road in Apex. The motorcycle then ran into a culvert near Sawyers Mill Road. The force of impact threw the man off of the motorcycle.

On February 21, 2008 in Greenville, North Carolina, traffic was blocked at Arlington Boulevard and West Fifth Street for about three hours after a 20 year-old nursing student was involved in a fatal car accident.

According to authorities, the female nursing student died when her Chevrolet Cavalier was struck by a Ford Explorer. The two vehicles collided in the intersection and an investigation is ongoing. The woman was a nursing student and activist at Pitt Community College.

A man went into cardiac arrest and died on March 14, 2008 after being involved in a two-car accident in Gastonia, North Carolina.

A 1993 Nissan was traveling west on Crescent Lane near Newcastle Road when it crossed the center line. A 1999 Chrysler traveling east swerved into the westbound lane trying to avoid the car wreck but collided head-on when the Nissan cut back onto its own side. The driver of the Chrysler was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital and the driver of the Nissan was in stable condition at Charlotte Memorial. The passenger in the Nissan, however, was later pronounced dead once arriving at the hospital.

On March 9, 2008, an 18-year-old senior from Princeton High School was killed in a fatal car accident at the intersection of Brogden and Old Sanders roads, southeast of Smithfield, North Carolina.

The teen girl was driving a 2001 Toyota Celica, and was trying to turn left onto Brodgen Road. Authorities said she failed to yield the right of way, and was then hit by a 2000 Ford Explorer in the driver’s side. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was charged with driving without a license, but will not be charged in connection with the fatality.

On March 2, 2008, a 17-year-old boy from J.H. Rose High School was killed in a car accident after he lost control of the car while crossing a bridge.

The fatal car accident, which occurred near Falkland, North Carolina, is attributed to the teens 2003 Nissan Altima crossing the center line and hitting oncoming traffic. The Altima hit a 2005 Ford Explorer.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident.

On March 5, 2008, a tractor-trailer driver ran a red light on Forest Hills School Road and Highway 74 in Union County, causing a car accident. The car involved in the accident was driven by a teen and her teenage sister.

One of the teens in the car accident was airlifted to Carolina Medical Center, while the other was taken by ambulance. Authorities have not determined if the driver of the tractor-trailer truck will face charges.

The driver of a car that hit and injured a five-year-old boy in Castilia, North Carolina faces numerous charges, including passing a stopped school bus, driving with a revoked license, driving with no insurance, driving without car tags, having an inspection violation, driving with improper equipment, failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and having drug paraphernalia in the car.

The driver hit a five-year-old boy as he was getting off of the school bus. He was airlifted to Pitt Memorial and suffered a fractured skull and required stitches. The woman who hit the boy said her car wouldn’t stop. The car had no brakes and had bad tires.

On March 3, 2008, the Johnston County District Attorney’s office charged a 17-year-old driver with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The charges stem from a fatal car accident that left his 15-year-old girlfriend dead. The teen also faces charges of exceeding a safe speed and a child restraint violation, as neither he nor his girlfriend were wearing a seatbelt.

The 17-year-old boy was driving his girlfriend home from a friend’s 18th birthday party around 8:30 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle while rounding a curve on Creek Bridge Road in Four Oaks, North Carolina. The car, a 1997 Ford Pickup truck, dropped onto the right shoulder, and the driver overcorrected.

The 15-year-old girl was ejected from the pickup when it struck a ditch, and the truck flipped twice and landed on top of her. She was transported to Johnston County Memorial Hospital, where she died.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries. The truck was traveling an estimated 65 miles-per-hour at the time of the fatal car accident. The speed limit was 55 miles-per-hour. Troopers credit the driver’s inexperience as the biggest factor in the car accident, more so than speeding, and alcohol was not a factor.

On February 29, 2008, three men from New Bern, North Carolina died after a fatal car accident on U.S. 17. The driver of the car was navigating his 1999 Ford Taurus around a curve, lost control of the car and went sideways into the other lane of traffic.

A Chevrolet pickup truck then hit the car, killing the driver and two passengers in the car. The driver of the Chevrolet and his passenger were taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina with serious injuries.

On March 3, 2008, a Raleigh man was charged with second-degree murder after he hit another car while trying to elude a police officer, killing a 21-year-old driver of another car in the car accident.

In addition to second-degree murder charges, the driver also faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, speeding and eluding arrest.

A police report said the 21-year-old driver was waiting to turn left on Proctor Road in Raleigh, North Carolina at approximately 2 a.m. when the other driver lost control of his car, crashing into the side of his door. The car traveled about 61 feet before stopping near Cross Link Road. The 21-year-old driver died at WakeMed Hospital.

After the car accident, the other driver kept driving on Rock Quarry Road before stopping upside-down. He then tried to run from police, but was caught. He had been pulled over earlier for a headlight violation, and was trying to elude police, though police were not pursuing him at the time of the fatal car accident.

On February 27, 2008, a three-car accident in Wilson, North Carolina** sent two to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. One man faces charges in the car accident after running a red light and driving without an operator’s license.

Shortly before 1 p.m., a red Ford Focus sped through a stop light and hit a burgundy Chevrolet Cavalier that had the right-of-way and was crossing the intersection of Hines Street and Park Avenue.

The Cavalier spun and hit a third car that was waiting to turn left. The driver of the Ford Focus lost control of the car, which flipped onto its roof.

No one was seriously injured in the car accident, but two drivers were transported to Wilson Medical Center with minor injuries. Both vehicles were thought to be totaled.

On February 28, 2008, a State Highway Trooper’s report revealed that the driver of a truck involved in a car accident that killed a 67-year-old woman has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

The victim had stopped her car to turn into Landmark Baptist Church in Greenville, North Carolina, where she worked as a secretary. The man facing charges was traveling 55 miles-per-hour when he drove his 2008 Dodge truck into the right rear of the woman’s car.

The impact of the car accident sent both cars off of the highway, trapping the woman inside her wrecked car. She was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where she died the next morning.

While no felony charges were filed against the man, he could face a civil lawsuit.

On February 26, 2008 on North Carolina Highway 87/65, four cars collided with each other. According to officials, three people were sent to Annie Penn Hospital for treatment of injuries.

The four car accident occurred at 1:28 p.m. when a Toyota pickup hit another vehicle after crossing the centerline. The second car then hit a third vehicle after it crossed the centerline. A fourth car attempting to avoid collision with the other vehicles, swerved and hit an embankment.

On February 22, 2008, police in Morganton, North Carolina arrested a man believed to have helped hide a car involved in a pedestrian hit-and-run car accident that left a blind man in serious condition. Officers said the arrested man was the owner of the SUV involved in the car accident, and that after he hid the vehicle, he reported it stolen. The man has been charged with accessory after the fact to the hit-and-run accident.

Police are still looking for the man who was driving the SUV at the time of the pedestrian car accident, and have a warrant out for his arrest. They intend to charge him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of the accident, a felony.

The 49-year-old blind man who was hit by the car was walking with his brother on Center Street in Morganton when he was hit by a mid-90s red Isuzu Rodeo. The blind man was carried for more than 100 yards, mostly on the hood of the car. He is currently in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center.

On Tuesday, February 12, in Cleveland County, North Carolina, a minivan collided with a school bus, leaving four children injured. The accident occurred at the intersection of Stoney Point Road and Oak Grove Road. The school bus was in route to Davidson School.

Police say that the driver of the minivan will be charged with violating a signal light. The four injured children were transported to Kings Mountain Hospital. Neither the driver of the minivan nor the driver of the bus was injured.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, a fatal bus accident involving a bus and a minivan left one person dead. The accident occurred near Medical Plaza Drive on W.T. Harris Boulevard in the early morning, officials said.

Police reported that the minivan was struck by a Charlotte Area Transit System bus, leaving the driver of the minivan dead.
