Cymbalta may worsen liver disease

FDA warns anti-depressant drug Cymbalta may worsen liver disease in patients with underlying conditions - 10/17/05

The anti-depressant drug Cymbalta should not be prescribed for patients with liver disease or any liver insufficiency because the drug might worsen their underlying conditions, the FDA stated today. Cymbalta was approved in August 2004 to treat major depressive disorder as well as nerve pain associated with diabetes, and more than 1 million people are estimated to be taking it. However, several reports of liver injury in patients who are taking the drug have led the FDA to issue a consumer warning.

Cymbalta's label already warns patients of the possibility of liver injury, and doctors were cautioned not to prescribe Cymbalta to patients with alcohol addiction because clinical studies showed that some patients experienced liver damage when they consumed Cymbalta with alcohol. Lilly issued a letter to healthcare professionals October 5, 2005, with the updated warning information. Lilly has also received reports of patients with jaundice while on Cymbalta.
