NC Workers' Comp - Eye Damage or Blindness

Vision problems, including blindness, can affect all types of work situations. Limited vision can prevent a person from driving or doing any type of detailed or artistic work.

According to Prevent Blindness America, eye injuries in the workplace are very common. More than 2,000 people a day injure their eyes at work, and one in 10 requires one or more missed workdays of recovery. Ten percent to 20 percent of all work-related eye injuries will cause temporary or permanent vision loss.

Common causes for eye injuries are:
  • Flying objects (bits of metal, glass)
  • Tools
  • Particles
  • Chemicals
  • Harmful radiation
  • A combination of the above
According to Prevent Blindness America, the best way to prevent eye injury at work is to wear safety eyewear whenever there is a chance of eye injury. Anyone working in or passing through areas that pose eye hazards should wear protective gear.
