About our Workers' Compensation Team |
The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin has four Board Certified Specialists in Workers’ Compensation Law. These individuals are certified by the North Carolina State Bar as having demonstrated special knowledge, skill, and proficiency in a specific area of law.
The North Carolina Industrial Commission is the legal body charged with administering and enforcing Workers’ Compensation laws. Two of our staff members – Doug Berger and Matthew Harbin – served as a Deputy Commissioner and Special Deputy Commissioner, respectively, with the North Carolina Industrial Commission.
Several other members have worked as defense lawyers for the insurance industry. These attorneys have seen the law from both sides.
Several have more than 10 years of Workers’ Compensation and/or civil litigation experience. The Workers’ Compensation Team has access to several staff members who are bilingual, speaking English and Spanish.
- J. Michael Mackay, Head of the Workers’ Compensation Division; Board Certified Specialist in Workers' Compensation law; Former defense lawyer for insurance companies;
- Matthew Harbin, Board Certified Specialist in Workers' Compensation law; Former Special Deputy Commissioner of the North Carolina Industrial Commission;
- Barry Jennings, Board Certified Specialist in Workers' Compensation law and former insurance defense lawyer for insurance companies;
- Doug Berger, Former Deputy Commissioner of the North Carolina Industrial Commission (10 years); Supervised the North Carolina Industrial Commission’s Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit, and later managed its Claims Administration Department.
- Jennifer Shapiro, Board Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation law and former insurance defense attorney with more than 10 years of legal experience;
- Rick Fleming, Board Certified Specialist in Social Security Disability Law; a bilingual attorney who takes pride in representing injured people.
- J. Gabe Talton, a bilingual attorney and a former public defender; Active in organizations related to the Hispanic community;
- J. Hunter Eddins-Gentel, Former defense lawyer for insurance companies
