Morganton Law Office Location
Morganton — Located halfway between Asheville and Winston-Salem, and nestled in the foothills of the eastern base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Morganton is the hub and the largest city in Burke County. I-40 passes through the south of the city. Morganton is part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nearby Lake James offers more than 100 miles of shoreline, and Morganton boasts numerous public parks for people to enjoy. Five miles north of Morganton is the oldest known European inland settlement in the U.S., with Spanish explorers settling a site called Fort San Juan, 40 years before the English settled Jamestown, Virginia. Prior to early European settlers taking over the land, the site of Fort San Juan was the site of the Mississippian chiefdom of Joara. The Burke County area also served as hunting and fishing grounds for the Cherokee and Catawba tribes. State-operated facilities like the North Carolina School for the Deaf and Broughton Hospital (a psychiatric hospital), are found in Morganton. The City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium (CoMMA) regularly hosts shows and events. With plenty of breweries, parks, galleries, dining, and shopping options, the Morganton of today boasts a population of about 17,000.*
Hickory — Hickory is located in Catawba County, also in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, with a population of about 41,000.* What started as a stop on the Western North Carolina Railroad became a booming beacon of industry in the 20th century. Hickory is known for its furniture manufacturing, and is home to Hickory White (formerly Hickory Manufacturing Company), which has been open since 1902. It continues to operate today, and is estimated to have produced 60% of the furniture in the United States at one point. It is also home to Apple’s largest data center, along with Bed Bath & Beyond. Lenoir-Rhyne University, a private liberal arts school, is located in Hickory, and has transformed the town into a college town. Lake Hickory is a man-made lake that’s been a popular attraction for boat owners and fishermen alike. The movie Hunger Games was filmed right outside of the town, with locals playing background roles in the movie. Hickory also boasts the Hickory Motor Speedway, which is touted as the “birthplace of the NASCAR stars.”
Lenoir — Lenoir is situated in Caldwell County, and is the largest city and the center for government and commerce in the county. It has a population of about 16,500.* Originally known as Tucker’s Barn when it was first settled in the 1700s, the name was changed to Lenoir after Revolutionary War general William Lenoir. His restored home, Fort Defiance, is a local tourist attraction. Google has a data center in Lenoir, but furniture manufacturing has always dominated industry in the area. More recently, furniture giant Broyhill Furniture closed its headquarters in Lenoir. However, with the arrival of technology, pharmacy, labs, breweries, event spaces, and more, Lenoir is poised to experience a growth boom.
