“Helping property owners seek the true value of their land is something in which I take personal pride.”
- Daniel J. McCann
Attorney Daniel J. McCann
Attorney Daniel McCann joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 2025 as part of the firm’s eminent domain practice in Georgia. He understands that most people never anticipate facing a government taking and are often caught off guard when the notice arrives – legally, emotionally, and financially. Dan is driven by a desire to help protect property owners’ rights and pursue the full value of their land.
Early Inspiration
Dan’s interest in eminent domain traces back to his childhood. He grew up hearing the story of his grandfather, an attorney who successfully challenged a township’s attempt to take a right-of-way easement without fair compensation or due process. That case ultimately reached the New Jersey Supreme Court, where his grandfather prevailed, prompting the town to abandon the project. The experience left a lasting impression on Dan and planted the seed for his future career.
After earning his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, he began his career as an M&A Tax Associate, providing transactional tax analysis, conducting due-diligence reviews, and crafting corporate structure assessments involving intricate financial and tax implications. Through this work, he developed a strong fluency in valuation, financial modeling, and the economic impacts of high-stakes decisions – knowledge he now leverages in eminent domain cases.
In 2024, Dan shifted his focus to litigation, practicing at an insurance defense firm. There, he sharpened his courtroom readiness, case management, and negotiation skills while handling a substantial litigation docket. He also gained experience conducting and defending depositions in complex matters, an ability that proves very useful when analyzing and challenging expert appraisals in eminent domain disputes.
Focused Representation
Dan realized that eminent domain was a practice area which would utilize his analytical strengths, financial training, and commitment to client advocacy. He saw that he could use his specific skillset to help property owners make sense of the complex process and try to minimize the impact of the taking while maximizing their potential compensation.
Dan guides Georgia property owners through every step of eminent domain takings, from initial case evaluation and valuation disagreements to negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and trial when necessary. His combination of financial insight, litigation experience, and dedication to his clients makes him a strong advocate for landowners facing government takings.
Life Beyond the Courtroom
Outside the office, Dan brings the same enthusiasm and drive to his personal pursuits. He is an avid golfer with a competitive handicap and a licensed private pilot who enjoys flying recreationally. He also spends time with his dog Rooney and stays loyal to his favorite teams – the Atlanta Braves, Georgia Bulldogs, and South Carolina Gamecocks.
Dan recently completed a Fermentation and Distillery Science Certificate program, channeling his interest in both the science and craft behind great spirits. Whether he’s flying, playing sports, or exploring a new field of study, Dan approaches each endeavor with the same focus and passion that define his legal practice.
