Lisa Hicks*
Lisa Hicks brings creativity, strategy, and a deep sense of purpose to her role as Director of Digital Marketing at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin. Lisa leads the firm’s digital presence with both technical precision and heartfelt storytelling – always focused on connecting people to the information and support they need during difficult moments.
A Foundation Built on Family, Responsibility, and Resilience
Lisa was born and raised in Henderson, North Carolina, as the youngest and only girl in a family of five children. Having immigrated from Vietnam, her parents worked long 12-hour shifts and did not speak English, which meant Lisa often became the bridge between them and the world around them. From a young age, she learned independence, accountability, and how to navigate unfamiliar systems, and these skills continue to shape her leadership today.
Although her family had limited resources, they prioritized exposure to the world, traveling together to places like Paris, Hong Kong, Canada, and Vietnam. These experiences broadened Lisa’s perspective and instilled a lifelong curiosity about people, cultures, and communication. Music also played a formative role in her childhood; she studied piano and voice from a young age, developing discipline, creativity, and a love for teaching.
Education, Opportunity, and Giving Back
Growing up as an “other” in Henderson presented challenges that required resilience and self-advocacy. Lisa learned how to confront stereotypes, explain her culture, and carve out space for herself. Just as importantly, she learned the value of “giving back.” Lisa committed herself to service, volunteering extensively and stepping into leadership roles as a way of giving back to a community that had supported her family often.
Lisa understood early on that scholarships and well-rounded involvement were essential to achieving her goals. She earned her undergraduate degree through the prestigious North Carolina Teaching Fellows program, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music Education from Meredith College. She later completed her Master of Science in Communication at NC State University, again graduating summa cum laude while serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant.
The Intersection of Education, Marketing, and Advocacy
Lisa was drawn to the legal profession because it aligned seamlessly with her passion for education and community empowerment. She sees digital marketing as a powerful way to inform people of their rights, guide them through complex systems, and support them during vulnerable moments.
Lisa joined James Scott Farrin (JSF) at a pivotal moment of firm growth. Having previously worked at a technology company that evolved from startup to Fortune 500 acquisition, she recognized how energizing it is to help an organization find its voice and build genuine community connections. At JSF, she saw an opportunity to help shape a powerful brand, support geographic and digital expansion, and contribute to meaningful outreach.
As Director of Digital Marketing, Lisa leads both the creative and technical strategy behind the firm’s online presence. Her work spans website management, paid digital advertising, social media platforms, press releases, and online reputation management. She thrives on the challenge of meeting people where they are and translating complex legal information into accessible, meaningful content. She also enjoys mentoring college students in the firm’s internship program, providing hands-on guidance, constructive feedback, and insight into the day-to-day marketing of a law firm to help prepare them for future success.
Life Beyond the Office
Outside of work, Lisa remains connected to music and education and teaches piano and voice to young students. She also supports several nonprofit organizations by lending her creativity to arts-focused fundraising efforts and stays actively involved in her children’s schools, reinforcing her lifelong commitment to teachers and education.
Lisa lives in Apex, North Carolina, with her husband, Brian, their children—Maxwell and Mackenzie—and their energetic puppy, Dawson.
