Maximize your Social Security retirement benefits

Many people believe that they will receive the same amount of monthly Social Security retirement benefits no matter when they retire, as long as they are at least age 62. That is not the case.

Monthly benefits actually increase by 7 to 9 percent for every year a person delays claiming retirement benefits, up to age 70. The reason is that those who sign up at a younger age are expected to get monthly checks for a longer period of time. This has caused some retirees to live off of private savings and investment income for as long as possible before filing for Social Security benefits.

Audit Studies Difference in Social Security Disability Approvals at Local, Hearing Levels

When people apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) their case is first adjudicated by the local Disability Determination Services (DDS) Office. If they are denied, they can request a reconsideration from the DDS Office, followed by a hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge (in a local or national hearing office).

A recent audit report on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Office of the Inspector General found that more than half (60 percent) of those who were denied disability benefits by the local Disability Determination Services (DDS) Office were later approved at the hearing level.  This is particularly important because it takes an average of three to five months for a decision to be made at the local level but it can take upwards of a year to get a hearing date.

Medicare Celebrates 45th Anniversary

With all of the events surrounding Social Security’s 75th anniversary, people may not realize that it is also the 45th anniversary of the federal Medicare program, the nation’s primary health care program for those over 65.

The program was designed to provide basic healthcare to many of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens – the elderly and those with disabilities. The program has changed over the years. The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 introduced Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C). In 2003, Medicare Part D, the prescription drug program, was added. In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) closed the prescription drug coverage gap (the so-called “doughnut hole”) and eliminated co-pays and cost-sharing for most preventative screenings.
