“Some insurance companies may not take cases seriously enough. What you see in adverts is not what happens in the real world. I aim to convince them that it is serious.”

Attorney Thomas J. Godfrey

Thomas Godfrey joined the personal injury department of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 2022, representing clients and fighting to protect their rights.

He received his J.D. from Charleston School of Law in Charleston, South Carolina, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, was a Presidential Scholar, and served as a Member of the Moot Court Board. Thomas received his B.A. in English from Limestone University in Gaffney, South Carolina, where he attended on an athletic scholarship.

How Thomas got to South Carolina in the first place is a story all its own.

He was born in East Sussex in the south of England. Law was never in his mind growing up. That honor went to football (soccer to us). Thomas was quite good, playing on a professional youth team in Brighton before being offered an athletic scholarship. That’s when his future took the first of a few turns that brought him to us.

In his junior year, Thomas felt like he needed a direction and began to look for what it was he wanted to do. As a lover of the English language, he knew he wanted to use that. He figured it would be a good fit when he saw the J.D. program.

Thomas flourished in law school and learned what he wanted to do very early on.

“If I could advise someone going into law school, it would be to focus from the first day. Get locked in and give it everything. And don’t wait to figure out what you want to do with what you’re learning. Find what you enjoy as soon as you can.”

Thomas started working with a firm doing a great deal of litigation work, helping clients deal with insurance companies and building cases right out of college. It’s precisely what he enjoys doing.

And despite processing massive amounts of information, he is always focused on the person he’s helping.

“Early in my career, I remember helping some single parents who were really up against it. Injured, fired for not coming to work because of it, and generally in a bad way. Getting them a result and making a difference in their lives stays with me.”1

He’s still a massive football fan – a Chelsea loss ruins the weekend, and he’ll die happy if he sees England hoist the World Cup.

Thomas is currently a member of the North Carolina Bar and South Carolina Bar, the South Carolina Young Lawyers Division, and the Mecklenburg County Bar Association.

I love the staff at James Scott Farrin.
I love the staff at James Scott Farrin. They are organized, nice, [and] friendly, and they seem to be very family-oriented. I've just recently referred another client to them because I know they will take care of her. 1
